GETTING BEHIND DAME MARY PETERS.
Following the appointment of BMW Group as the Official Automotive Partner of the 2012 Games, BMW began actively supporting British athletes, such as Ellie Simmonds and Louis Smith, via the BMW London 2012 Performance Team. Meanwhile, in line with this initiative, BMW dealers like us made the decision to get behind a local athlete of our own.
Our choice was former Olympian, Dame Mary Peters, one of the most successful athletes of her generation.
Dame Mary’s story
Former athlete Dame Mary Peters won an Olympic gold medal in 1972. She retired in 1974 after 16 successful years in the sport and now spends her time dedicated to The Mary Peters Trust, which empowers aspiring sports people. This trust is also the channel through which companies, organisations and individuals can do their bit to give talented young people a sporting chance.
“It’s really great to be working with Bavarian and BMW,” said Dame Mary Peters. “Our country hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games is an excellent opportunity to get young people into sport. It’s also fantastic having a brand new car from now until the end of the Games. I’m doing a lot of travelling for promotional events so it’s great to be able to arrive in style.”
Joe Rogers, Dealer Principal at Bavarian, said: “Our staff and customers are really happy to be working with Dame Mary Peters. She was a fantastic athlete when competing and is a now a local icon. I’m sure she will be an inspiration to many young athletes.”
